New York Jets wide receiver and punt returner Jeremy Kerley, who suffered a concussion in the season-opening win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, won't play Thursday night against the New England Patriots.
The Jets announced Kerley's status Wednesday before leaving for Foxborough.
The news came as no surprise, as the team said Monday that Kerley was concussed even though he was cleared to return to the game. He passed in-game and postgame concussion tests, according to the team, but exhibited symptoms Monday and was diagnosed with a concussion.
Kerley's helmet flew off on an eight-yard reception when he was sandwiched by a trio of Buccaneers defenders -– Leonard Johnson, Dashon Goldson and Mark Barron, who was penalized for unnecessary roughness. On the previous series, Goldson was penalized for a similar hit on tight end Jeff Cumberland.
Anticipating Kerley's absence, the Jets re-signed veteran Ben Obomanu, who was with the team in training camp. Obomanu arrived in time for Tuesday's practice.
Kerley's absence will be felt in two ways. He is the Jets' slot receiver, playing in three-receiver packages, and their top punt returner.
