When it comes to days with injury updates, there have been better ones for the Bengals than Wednesday.
During the afternoon, they announced that backup veteran defensive end Robert Geathers, injured on a third-quarter play during Monday night's 20-10 win over Pittsburgh, was lost for the season with an elbow issue. One of the longest serving players in Bengals history, Geathers was just resigned to a three-year, $9 million deal in the offseason.
To compensate for his loss, the Bengals likely will activate rookie defensive end Margus Hunt for Sunday's game against the Packers. The rookie drafted in the second round has been among the inactives in Cincinnati's first two games.
"The redshirt may be over," defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said.
In addition to likely playing Hunt, there is a chance outside linebacker James Harrison also could help set the edge by shifting down more often to play closer to the line of scrimmage in pass rush scenarios. With so many teams like the Steelers employing pass-first, no-huddle type offenses, this could be a way the Bengals get Harrison on the field. Zimmer wasn't tipping his hand that such a tweak could occur, but he said he "agreed" with those who think it might.
Along with the move on Geathers, the Bengals practiced Wednesday without cornerbacksBrandon Ghee, Dre Kirkpatrick and Adam "Pacman" Jones.
Ghee hasn't practiced since early in the preseason when he suffered a concussion in Cincinnati's preseason game at Atlanta. Kirkpatrick and Jones suffered apparent injuries during Monday's game. Kirkpatrick played the first half but didn't play at all in the second, as he was kept on the sidelines and was out of his uniform.
Offensive tackle Anthony Collins, receiver Marvin Jones and defensive end Carlos Dunlap also were limited in Wednesday's session.
Aside from Geathers, head coach Marvin Lewis doesn't seem concerned he'll have any other players out Sunday.
"We'll be pretty good," Lewis said.
Here's what the Bengals' full injury report looked like Wednesday:
Did Not Practice: CB Brandon Ghee (concussion), CB Dre Kirkpatrick (hamstring), Adam Jones (abdomen), S Jeromy Miles (hamstring), G Mike Pollak (knee), DE Robert Geathers (elbow -- IR)
Limited Participation in Practice: OT Anthony Collins (knee), WR Marvin Jones (foot), DE Carlos Dunlap (thigh)
