Cowboys looking at all guard combinations

The assumption has been that when Brian Waters is ready to move into the starting lineup that it would be for Mackenzy Bernadeau at right guard.

Not so fast.

While Waters has been getting most of his work at right guard and has taken some first-team snaps, there has been a rotation among Bernadeau and Ronald Leary at practice.

“We’re going to see how everybody plays and try and make the best decision we can going forward,” coach Jason Garrett said.

Waters played left guard for 11 years in Kansas City before moving to right guard with New England in 2011.

Bernadeau started the opener against the New York Giants at right guard but with Leary recovering from knee surgery in training camp he moved to the left side with Doug Free at right guard. Bernadeau played left guard in the Cincinnati preseason game.

Garrett said Bernadeau played “pretty well,” against the Giants.

Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Callahan said the coaches would meet Thursday and Friday to determine whether Waters is active and what role he could play Sunday at Kansas City. Garrett said it is conceivable Waters and Bernadeau could split time the way Free and Jermey Parnell did late last season at right tackle or start.

“He’s making progress really every single day,” Garrett said. “We want to move him towards playing at some point so we got to evaluate him on a day-to-day basis.”
