Steelers at Bengals: Numbers watch

Saturday, September 14, 20130 comments

Statistics may ultimately mean little when division rivals like theCincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers meet on Monday night, but they can indicate where a game might be headed. After starting the season with losses last week, both teams are looking to even their records at 1-1. One of them won't be able to do that.

Before you sit down to watch as Cincinnati opens its home slate at Paul Brown Stadium, take a look at these numbers that could end up having some kind of impact on the game and, in turn, on the Bengals' season:

12: Percentage of NFL teams since 1990 that have made it to the playoffs after starting a season 0-2.

0: Times the Bengals have had a winning season after starting a season 0-2.

2: As in Week 2. After losing their openers the last two seasons, the Steelers have responded in Week 2 with a victory.

7: Number of games the Steelers have gone without hitting the 100-yard rushing mark. The last time they went eight straight without 100 yards in a single game was in 1935. Only the Chargers (eight) have a longer active streak.

27: Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton's QBR in his four career games against the Steelers.

54.6: Dalton's QBR in the other 29 regular-season games of his career.

3: Games in Bengals receiver A.J. Green's career in which he has had only one catch. Two of those came at Paul Brown Stadium against the Steelers.

29: Number of receptions Green has in his career that were thrown 20 yards or more downfield. Only Detroit's Calvin Johnson has caught more passes (37) thrown that far. Johnson's career started four years before Green's.

3.03: Average number of seconds Dalton holds onto the ball before passing or taking a sack. Only New England's Tom Brady, at 3.01 seconds, has a quicker release.

1.98: Average number of seconds Dalton took before pass attempt against Chicago last week, according to Pro Football Focus.

62.3: Percentage of defensive plays linebacker James Harrison was on the field in Cincinnati's opener at Chicago.

84.1: Percentage of defensive plays Harrison was on the field on average during his nine seasons with the Steelers.

5: Sacks that Harrison was in on in a 2001 college game between his Kent State team and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's Miami (Ohio) team. That game marks the last time the former teammates played against one another.
